What Paper is and who it's for

Paper is the most widely used high-performance fork of Spigot, maintained by the PaperMC team (the same team behind Velocity and Folia). It runs almost all Bukkit and Spigot plugins, adds its own richer plugin API, and fixes many gameplay and performance issues — which is why most public plugin servers run it. Older guides call it PaperSpigot or PaperMC; it is the same project.

Every Paper download on MCJarHub comes straight from PaperMC's official build server with the SHA-256 checksum PaperMC publishes, plus the commit messages of recent builds. How to set up a Paper server

Steps for the latest version (26.3); every version page has its own exact commands.

  1. Install Java 25 or newer (e.g. Eclipse Temurin) and check it with java -version.
  2. Download the Paper jar into an empty folder.
  3. Start it once with the script below; it creates eula.txt and stops.
  4. Set eula=true in eula.txt to accept the Minecraft EULA, then start again. Players join on port 25565.
  5. Put plugins (.jar) into plugins/ and restart.

What is the latest Paper version?

Is Paper compatible with Spigot plugins?

Yes. Paper is a fork of Spigot and runs almost every Bukkit/Spigot plugin. A few plugins that depend on exact Spigot internals may need an update.

Why is there no Paper for Minecraft 1.20.3?

Minecraft 1.20.4 was a hotfix released days after 1.20.3, so PaperMC went straight to 1.20.4. Use Paper 1.20.4.

Are PaperMC, Paper and PaperSpigot different?

No. PaperMC is the organisation, Paper is the server software, and PaperSpigot is its old name.
