Known issues & safety notes

How to set up Velocity 3.1.1-SNAPSHOT

  1. Install Java 11 or newer (e.g. Eclipse Temurin) and check it with java -version.
  2. Download the Velocity jar and start it with the script below — a proxy has no Mojang EULA and is not tied to one Minecraft version.
  3. It listens on port 25565 by default (bind in velocity.toml). Players connect to the proxy; your backend servers run on other ports (or machines) and must not be reachable directly.
  4. Use modern forwarding: in velocity.toml set player-info-forwarding-mode = "modern"; the secret is in forwarding.secret. On each Paper backend set online-mode=false in server.properties, and in config/paper-global.yml set proxies.velocity.enabled: true, proxies.velocity.secret to the same secret and proxies.velocity.online-mode to match Velocity (Paper 1.18.2 and older: settings.velocity-support in paper.yml).
  5. Register your backend servers in the proxy config and restart.

echo "Java 11 or newer is required (found Java $JAVA_MAJOR)."

The JVM flags are the ones Velocity's documentation recommends. Customise RAM, flags and restart loop →

A proxy needs little memory: 512 MB–1 GB is plenty for most networks. How much RAM?

Docker

docker run -d -p 25565:25565 -e TYPE=VELOCITY --name proxy itzg/mc-proxy

Uses the community itzg/mc-proxy image, which downloads the file itself.
