What SpongeVanilla is and who it's for

SpongeVanilla is the standalone server of the Sponge platform: it runs plugins written for the SpongeAPI instead of Bukkit. Its sibling SpongeForge adds Sponge plugins to a Forge server. Sponge has a smaller plugin ecosystem than Paper, but a clean, well-designed API.

SpongeVanilla downloads come from SpongePowered's own repository. Check that the plugins you need support the SpongeAPI version of the build you pick.

How to set up a SpongeVanilla server

Steps for the latest version (26.3); every version page has its own exact commands.

  1. Install Java 25 or newer (e.g. Eclipse Temurin) and check it with java -version.
  2. Download the SpongeVanilla jar into an empty folder.
  3. Start it once with the script below; it creates eula.txt and stops.
  4. Set eula=true in eula.txt to accept the Minecraft EULA, then start again. Players join on port 25565.
