Known issues & safety notes
- Preview builds are experimental: they can corrupt or irreversibly upgrade worlds, and most plugins and mods do not support them yet. Test on a copy of your world.
- Log4Shell (CVE-2021-44228): for vanilla 1.7–1.11.2 Mojang says to download log4j2_17-111.xml into the server folder and add
-Dlog4j.configurationFile=log4j2_17-111.xmlto the start command (Mojang advisory). - Known issues: search Forge's issue tracker for 1.7.10-pre4

forge-1.7.10-pre4-10.12.2.1149*.jar) withjava -Xmx6G -jar <that file> nogui. - Accept Mojang's EULA in
eula.txt(eula=true), start again, and put mods intomods/. - You can delete the installer and
installer.logafterwards.
Modded servers need more memory: 6–8 GB for a light modpack, 8–12 GB or more for large packs. Leave 1–1.5 GB for the operating system. How much RAM?

FAQ
What Java version does Forge 1.7.10 Pre-Release 4 need?
Forge 1.7.10 Pre-Release 4 needs Java 8 or newer. Running it on an older Java fails with an UnsupportedClassVersionError mentioning class file version 52.0.
Is Forge 1.7.10 Pre-Release 4 safe for my survival world?
Only on a copy. Preview versions are experimental and upgrade worlds irreversibly; keep a backup and don't switch a live world to a snapshot, pre-release or release candidate.
Is the Forge installer the server jar?
No. The installer (server.jar.zip) sets up the server: run it with --installServer, then start the server with the jar it creates.
